“A life worth living”

On Thursday 3rd of April I attended the Launch of  Dr. Michael Smurfits Autobiography “A life worth living” .  The event was held at the UCD Smurfit School in Blackrock and was  a who’s who of billionaires with  Dermot Desmond and Denis O ‘ Brien giving inspiring speeches as they both officially launched the autobiography.

In a way things have  come full circle in that over 20 years ago  my first full time, permanent pensionable job was on the College  Graduate Recruitment Programme that Dr Smurfit had set up. Each year it recruited 6 graduates from over 2,000 applicants from Irish University’s  and placed them in different functions throughout the organisation .Currently I am in the final stages of an MBA at the UCD school of Business that bears his name. It  seemed fitting therefore  that when an invite for the Launch event came my  way that I should accept it.

The Book is a good read and illustrates that fact that it really  is possible for an Irish Company to conquer the world just as the likes of Paddy Power, CRH , Kerry and Kingspan are doing at the moment.

Whilst  the industry landscape is now unrecognisable from that of twenty odd  years ago I have Dr Smurfit to thank for getting me into the Print Business and ultimately my current area of Point of Sale and Displays with The Printed Image, for that I will always be most grateful.

Lots of good people came from that Smurfit Graduate Programme. He was right to do it as it launched a lot of Business Careers in the right direction.
